Activity 5: Wheel Of Fortune
Relevant Content and Objective:
This activity allows students to visualize various coins and their comparative values. Students garner experience adding coin values together in hopes of acquiring the greatest sum (SOL Objectives 1.7 a and b).
Materials:
Die
Coin Spinner (Wheel Of Fortune)
Recording Chart
Directions
Description/Instructions:
This game may be played and demonstrated during whole-group instruction. It is also an excellent activity to include during math stations. Here's how to play:
1) The first player rolls the die.
2) The number indicated on the die represents the number of times that student may spin the wheel of fortune.
3) The student spins the wheel of fortune and writes a tally beneath the indicated coin on the recording sheet. The student spins the wheel of fortune as many times as designated by the die and continues to tally the indicated coins on the recording sheet.
4) The student finds the sum of his/her spins by adding the coin values.
5) The next player rolls the die and repeats steps 2-4.
6) The players compare their fortunes amassed on the "Wheel of Fortune."
Ideas for Differentiation:
This activity provides an opportunity for students to collaborate and assist each other in matching coin names on the recording sheet with their visual appearances on the spinner. Students may also work together to recall the values of each coin and determine their sum.
Students may refer to the directions and coin value cue card for additional assistance.
This activity can also be tailored for instruction regarding specific coins, in that the teacher may easily create a 2-piece spinner with only pennies and nickels or nickels and dimes.
Formative Assessment:
Teachers may use the recording sheet as a tool for formative assessment. Teachers may also record anecdotal data regarding the tools and resources each student applies while playing this game.
