Materials:
Bank On It Board
Coin Roll Sheet
Dice
Counters (Plastic Coins)
Instructions:
This activity can be implemented as a partner or group game during Math Work Stations. The winner is the first player to completely fill their board. Here's how to play:
1) Place a collection of plastic coins in the middle of the playing area. Each player chooses a Bank On It Board.
2) The first player rolls the die.
3) The player uses the Coin Roll Sheet to determine the coin associated with the number rolled.
4) The player covers the corresponding coin on his/her Bank On It Board
5) The other players repeat steps 2-4.
The first player to fill his/her game board is the winner.
All players should determine the value of the covered coins on their game boards and compare.
Ideas for Differentiation:
Combine groups of students who can assist each other for stations. Students who need additional assistance may also refer to the coin value cue cards. Students who need an additional challenge may cover the coins which sum to the value indicated by the die.
Formative Assessment:
Teachers may ask students to record the coins and their summed values in their math journals. Teachers may also record anecdotal data regarding each student's ability to relate coins with their respective values.
