Materials:
Recording Sheet
Household Item Boxes/Containers with Price Tags up $1.00
Plastic Coins
Cash Register (optional)
Instructions:
This is an excellent small group activity which incorporates all of the objectives within the first grade money math unit. Students may complete this activity within their table groups as a part of the whole-group lesson, and/or during math work stations. The teacher should collect household item boxes/containers and label each product with a price between one cent and one dollar.
1.Each student chooses an item to purchase.
2. The student records the name of the product on the recording sheet, and then sets aside the coins necessary to purchase said item.
3. He/she draws the coins on the recording sheet.
4. The student records the item amount.
5. The student chooses another item and repeats steps 1-4.
Ideas for Differentiation:
This activity provides an opportunity for students to collaborate in recalling the values of each coin and determining their sum.
Students may refer to the directions and coin value cue card for additional assistance.
Students may also choose products with low prices or prices easily created by one or two coins.
Teachers may also ask students to show multiple ways of paying for the same product.
Formative Assessment:
Teachers may collect students' recording sheets to observe which products each student chose as well as the coins they used to represent the price.
Teachers may also record anecdotal data regarding the tools and resources each student applies while playing the game.
