Activity 1: Pigs Will Be Pigs Banking Craft
Content and Objective:
After reading Pigs Will Be Pigs: Fun With Math and Money by Amy Axelrod, students will go on a money hunt in the classroom. After finding coins, the students will create their own piggy banks. This activity reinforces coin values while appealing to visual and kinesthetic learners. Materials:
Pigs Will Be Pigs: Fun With Math and Money by Amy Axelrod
Plastic or Paper Coins (for the Money Hunt)
Coins Print-Out
Piggy Bank Template
Description/Instructions:
After reading the book, Pigs Will Be Pigs: Fun With Math and Money, students will go on a "Money Hunt" in the classroom. Students will collect dimes, nickels, pennies, and quarters. Students may choose 5-10 of the coins that they found to place in their "piggy banks." Each student will decorate and cut-out a piggy bank. After choosing 5-10 coins, students will cut out the corresponding coins from the Coins Print-Out and paste the coins to their piggy banks. Students must record the sum value of their piggy bank's contents on the back of the bank. Students may exchange their piggy banks with a partner and determine the value of their friend's bank.
Ideas for Differentiation:
Students may choose from 5 to 10 coins to include in their piggy banks. This allows students to choose the coins with which they are most familiar. This also provides an opportunity for students who are proficient in money math to choose coins of varying values.
Students may also refer to the coin value cue card for additional support.
Formative Assessment:
Teachers may use the piggy banks as a tool for formative assessment- how many coins did the student choose to include? What types of coin did the student use? Did the student determine the correct value for the collection of coins?
Teachers may also record anecdotal data based upon observations while the students are working.
